Jesus Christ took the ten laws of Moses and reduced them to two laws:
- Love your God
- Love one another
Similarly, with no pretension to being Jesus Christ or anything like him, I submit that the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, the “Bill of Rights”, can be reduced to two laws:
- Mind Your Own Business (MYOB)
- Keep Your Hands Off My Stuff (KYHOMS
I offer the following table in support of that contention. It was a fifteen minute exercise to actually read the text of the Bill of Rights:
(Do not confuse the first draft 12 amendments with the actually ratified 10 amendments further down the page.)
We do just a modicum of analysis to decide whether each constitutes Mind Your Own Business (MYOB), Keep Your Hands Off My Stuff (KYHOMS), or both.
I enter a check mark for each where it does.
YMMV of course if you cannot read plain English.
I invite all to repeat this exercise, in particular reading the actual text of each amendment and reflecting on it.
Arguably the Ninth Amendment is the fuzziest in this regard. The others are unequivocal: Shall or Shall NOT:
|I||Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, redress of grievances||✔|
|II||Right to keep and bear arms||✔||✔|
|III||Sanctity of property||✔|
|IV||Sanctity of home, papers, effects, protection against unreasonable search and seizure||✔|
|V||Due process, including right to life, liberty, and property.||✔||✔|
|VI||Due process in criminal proceedings||✔|
|VII||Due process in civil suits||✔|
|VIII||Defense against unreasonable fines and cruel or unusual punishments||✔|
|IX||No conflict between rights of the people||~✔|
|X||We the people||✔||✔|
X. The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
We the people are the owners, the guardians, of our freedoms. NGOs and governments obey US, not the other way around.
